Goldendoodles

What is an f1 Goldendoodle?

An F1 Standard Goldendoodle has one purebred Standard Poodle parent and one purebred Golden Retriever parent. F1 means a first generation cross.

what is an f1b standard Goldendoodle?

An F1B Standard Goldendoodle has one F1 Standard Goldendoodle parent and one Standard Poodle parent and is 3/4 Poodle, 1/4 Golden retriever.

When selecting for the most appealing F1B Goldendoodles, I choose an F1 Goldendoodle with a less curly coat type for breeding to a Standard Poodle with a fleece type coat so that even if a puppy inherits mostly a poodle type coat, it will still be beautiful when groomed as a Goldendoodle as is apparent in the photo of Luke below. When the Goldendoodle parent has a straighter coat type as seen in the photo of Greta below, this produces F1Bs that are less likely to resemble a poodle and retain the Goldendoodle appearance while still having all the benefits of an F1B. This has proven true in my previous litters of F1Bs sired by Boone, who was the sire of Solomon pictured above. Boone had a hair type coat. Otis pictured above was a littermate of Boone but had a more typical Goldendoodle coat type.

Advantages of an F1B Goldendoodle

Both the F1 and the F1B are excellent all round family dogs and companion dogs. The differences are subtle. Here are the few things I can pick out that make the F1B more desirable to some people.

  • Highly intelligent – Poodles are the second smartest breed of dog based on scientific testing. Golden Retrievers are the fourth smartest breed. Since the F1B Goldendoodle is 3/4 Poodle, it raises the dog IQ just a bit. However, it has been my experience that for those people who love the Golden Retriever temperament and just want to reduce the shedding problems, the F1 Goldendoodle usually has more of that “golden” personality.
  • Non-shedding – Most F1 Goldendoodles are non-shedding but a few may still shed lightly. F1Bs don’t shed. This means that although you will still get a bit of hair on the hairbrush when you brush your dog, there will not be hair all over the house, the sofa, your clothing and so on, because there is no seasonal shedding. Their hair just keeps growing and needs periodic trimming. This is true of the majority of F1 Goldendoodles and all F1B Goldendoodles. The F1B is a safer choice for families with most dog allergies.
  • Not as high energy as an F1 – Since Standard Poodles are a bit more laid back than Golden Retrievers, the F1B cross is usually a calmer dog and well suited to being an indoor companion dog. They still need exercise but are quite content after their walk.
  • Very trainable as service dog or therapy dog – The intelligence level and ease of training of the Standard Poodle makes the F1B Goldendoodle a perfect candidate for a service dog or therapy dog. I can help you select the best candidate if you want an F1B Goldendoodle for this special training.
  • More color variations – Golden Retrievers come in three colors: gold, reddish gold, and cream. Standard Poodles come in a very wide range of colors with lots of different markings available, like tuxedo and particolor.
